Most Wanted fugitive hands himself in to police in Madrid
The criminal went on the run in Spain after murdering another man in Mexico City
The National Police in Madrid have arrested a fugitive who is part of Spain’s ‘10 Most Wanted’ criminals and Europol’s ‘Most Wanted’ list. The man is one of two suspects in a murder committed some years ago in Mexico and now faces 35 years behind bars.
The fugitive had been in hiding for three years, residing in various locations in Spain, having “changed his address every few months and lived clandestinely with the help of family and friends,” agents reported on Wednesday September 13.
To evade capture, the suspected murderer radically changed his physical appearance.
In collaboration with agents in Mexico, the Spanish team focused their investigation on the man’s known friends and relatives in an attempt to track down their suspect.
However, according to the National Police, the combined media and police pressure to which he was subjected finally became too much, and the fugitive decided to hand himself in to a police station in the capital, where he was subsequently arrested and is awaiting extradition.
The suspect is wanted for his alleged involvement in a Mexico City murder in 2012. The victim was repeatedly stabbed in the neck and torso before being thrown in a fuel drum and covered in concrete. The body was then hidden in the cellar of the house where the homicide was committed.
With this latest arrest, there are now five of the most wanted fugitives in Spain being held after a campaign was launched requesting help from members of the public back in May last year.
