Murcia becomes first region in Spain to offer flu vaccine to children up to age 9
More than 65,000 children will benefit as the regional government expands its vaccination programme

According to the Ministry of Health, this measure is expected to benefit more than 65,000 children, offering protection through a painless intranasal flu vaccine administered in schools. Previously, school vaccinations covered children aged 2 to 5 during the current school year, an extension of the initial range of 3- and 4-year-olds introduced in the 2023-2024 season. By further widening the age bracket, authorities aim to improve flu prevention among young children and reduce transmission rates in the community.
The expansion aligns with Murcia's broader efforts to strengthen its healthcare system and preventative care strategies. With this latest move, the region continues to lead in public health initiatives, ensuring greater access to vaccinations for young children and reinforcing its commitment to community well-being.
This decision comes as flu season remains a pressing concern, particularly for vulnerable populations. By increasing the availability of the intranasal vaccine, Murcia aims to make immunisation more accessible and convenient for families, reducing the risk of flu-related complications among school-aged children.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about vaccination schedules and ensure their children receive the recommended immunisation. The regional government continues to advocate for proactive health measures to safeguard public wellbeing and ease pressure on healthcare services during peak flu periods.
