ARCHIVED - Murcia Covid Update August 16: Covid infections continue to fall slowly
The number of hospital admissions remains stable but three more deaths have been registered
The latest data published by the regional health authorities would suggest that the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic is continuing to release its grip, with 146 infections registered on Sunday, August 15 in the Region of Murcia. It is important to note, however, that the weekend figures tend to be slightly skewed as far fewer PCR and antigen tests are carried out on Sundays. For example, yesterday 1,742 tests were administered in the Region resulting in an 8.38 per cent positivity rate. To compare this with Thursday, when some 5116 tests were carried out resulting in a 10:13 per cent positivity rate, it can be seen that the true picture is somewhat distorted.
Similarly, the all-important cumulative incidence rate over a 14-day period has dropped down to 381.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, whereas it was still at 422.3 on Thursday. While this figure is sure to rise tomorrow when the normal level of testing resumes, it is inching ever closer to the 250 case threshold set by the WHO to indicate that the pandemic is contained.
Just before restrictions on movement and mask wearing were eased the region had dropped below 50 cases per 100,000, so although the figures are heading in the right direction, they are still way too high for comfort.
Only one municipality of the region has not reported any cases in the last fortnight; Aledo, and 19 municipalities are above the regional average (see below).

Of the 146 new cases registered in the Region on Sunday (74 fewer than on Saturday) 34 correspond to the municipality of Cartagena, 32 to Murcia, 15 to Lorca, 6 to Jumilla, 5 to San Javier, 4 to Abarán, 4 to Cieza, 3 to Águilas, 4 to San Pedro del Pinatar, 4 to Santomera, 3 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 3 to Cehegín, 3 to Mazarrón, 3 to Moratalla, 3 to Torre Pacheco. The rest are distributed around the other municipalities.
Unfortunately, the Covid pandemic continues to leave fatalities in the Region, with another three deaths in the past 24 hours bringing the total number of victims to 1,651. The latest to have lost their lives are three women aged 95, 94 and 80, two from health area II (Cartagena) and one from health area VIII (Mar Menor).
Regarding hospital pressure, the number of admissions remains stable with 175 patients admitted, of which 30 patients are in serious condition in intensive care units (ICUs), including two pregnant women.
Of those currently admitted, 145 are aged between 15 and 93, and 83 people have not been vaccinated. The patients in the ICU are aged between 19 and 85, and 88 per cent have yet to receive a single dose of the Covid vaccine.
While the race to vaccinate the younger age groups has stepped up a notch in recent weeks in the Region, the cumulative incidence rate continues to be the highest in those aged between 12 and 19 years. In addition, of the almost 800 tests carried out on people in the 14 to 39 age group over the weekend, 18 positives were detected, and this age group represents more than 62 per cent of new infections recorded last week.
There are currently 4,235 people isolating at home with mild cases of Covid while a total of 126,697 people have recovered fully from the virus to date.
