ARCHIVED - Murcia health service links hospitals to improve access to medical details
The system will give medical centres in Murcia a comprehensive history of patients regardless of where they live
The implementation of a new system to link hospitals across the region enabling them to access medical data about patients has now concluded, giving doctors access to medical information about patients regardless of which hospital they are obliged to use in case of a medical emergency.
The pioneering move by the Murcian Health Service (SMS) will ensure that a patient’s medical history will be stored electronically so that health care staff can access it even when the patient is visiting a hospital outside their municipality. Until now, each hospital operated its own unique system, making it impossible to access the treatment history of a patient belonging to a different health area.
Now, patient information in the Region of Murcia has been integrated into a single central system, with the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital, the largest in the area, being the last to join the project.
In addition, a Central Drug Database has been launched, which will give medical staff instant electronic access to medication that each patient has been previously prescribed, cutting down greatly on possible medication errors and helping doctors to make potentially life-saving decisions should a patient require emergency treatment.
The new system has connected the nine health areas of the Region seamlessly, greatly improving patient care and security. Long-term, the hope is that the system will be adopted by medical services outside of the main hospitals, such as day and outpatient clinics.
