ARCHIVED - Murcia residents protest to keep the Cine Rex cinema as a protected cultural asset
A rally is taking place in front of the building to demand that it doesn’t end up in private hands
Those who remember going to the iconic Cine Rex cinema in Murcia city are desperately fighting to keep and protect the building after its closure to the public in 2019.
That’s why, this Thursday, July 7, there will be a new rally at 8.30pm at the door of the emblematic cinema, calling on the local Town Hall not to let it end up in private hands.
Organisers of the protest have promoted it on social media under the hashtag #SalvemosElCineRex. The cinema closed in 2019, and before showing films it was also a theatre.
But if now, three years after it closed, it is back in the news because the current owner has again proposed a change of use for the old building to be repurposed and house restaurants, nightclubs and even a gym.
A few weeks ago, Murcia City Council announced its intention to acquire the building and declare it an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC).
Those participating in the rally this evening now want a firm commitment from the City Council that the building will continue to be a “cultural landmark”.
