ARCHIVED - Murcia woman jailed for 24 years for setting fire to young mother
The 38-year-old Murcia mother suffered extensive burns and died from her injuries
The Superior Court in Murcia has handed down a 24-year prison sentence to a woman accused of killing a neighbour by dousing her in petrol before setting her alight. A 25-year original incarceration was reduced by 12 months, but the arsonist has still been convicted of murder and two counts of injury on a couple and the mother-in-law of the deceased, who rushed to her aid at the time of the attack.
The horrific assault occurred back in September of 2018, three days after the victim and her attacker had a fight. The court heard that the suspect went to the home of the second woman and as soon as she opened the front door, threw petrol all over her from a plastic bottle.
She then tossed a lighter at her target, who was immediately enveloped in flames.
According to the lawyers, the terrified mother of five, “seeing herself engulfed in flames, was screaming in pain and asking for help.”
Despite the quick intervention of other family members, the 38-year-old died in hospital the next day.
The Supreme Court ruling has ordered that the convicted woman pay compensation of 100,000 euros to the victim’s children and the other injured parties.
