Murcia's January heatwave stops just shy of breaking records
Despite Monday’s heat, Murcia city has yet to surpass the January highs of 2021, according to Aemet
Murcia was just a hair’s breath away from recording the hottest January day of all time after a warm air mass swooped in on Monday the 27th and nudged the thermometers upwards.
While further north people are wrapped up in the winter woollies and fighting to keep their umbrellas from being blown away, holidaymakers in Murcia and surrounding municipalities are happily strolling around in shorts and T-shirts.
Murcia hit an incredible 28.1ºC at the height of Monday and although it’s hard to believe, this actually isn’t the warmest of all time. That record goes to January 29 back in 2021, where the mercury in the capital reached 28.7ºC.
This year, Abanilla closely followed Murcia with a scorching 26.7°C and Cieza recorded a temperature of 26.5°C.
The heat has been noticeable in other parts of the Region, too, with towns such as Mula (26.1°C), Molina de Segura (25.7°C) and Totana (25.5°C) all easily exceeding 25 degrees.
Other inland areas, such as Lorca and Calasparra, reached 23.8°C on January 27, while in Puerto Lumbreras, Bullas, Águilas and Yecla values between 21.5°C and 22.3°C were recorded.
In the temperature ranking, the coastal municipalities have shown more moderate values, with Cartagena and San Javier around 19°C, while the lowest temperature was recorded in Caravaca (Los Royos), at 18.4°C.
As of nine o'clock on Monday night, the Region's emergency services had managed 42 incidents and received 41 calls related to the episode of winds and rough waves, most of them related to obstacles on the road (23).
Cartagena was the municipality where most cases were located (17), followed by Murcia (6).
Thankfully, none of the incidents were serious, although there was one notable incident where several palm trees toppled over and landed on parked cars next to the Air Academy in San Javier.
This summer interlude was short-lived, however, and temperatures have already started to drop with the onset of storm Herminia. There was even snowfall in the northwest of the Region of Murcia on Tuesday morning, January 28.
Two orange level warnings remain in place for gale-force gusts of wind and over the next couple of days, the mercury is expected to fall by as much as 10°C.
