ARCHIVED - Netflix earns 17 times more in Spain in the space of a year
Income for the streaming giant in 2021 was over half a billion euros, 17 times more than in 2020
Netflix in Spain earned 579.3 million euros in 2021, its first year paying taxes in Spain after it moved its fiscal base from the Netherlands in 2020. This figure is almost 17 times as much as the turnover Netflix registered in 2020, when its income was around 34.4 million.
The increase in turnover has also had an impact on net profit. Netflix’s earnings in Spain have reached 8.7 million euros, compared to the 1.5 million it registered in 2020 and the 924,627 euros it earned in 2019, its first full year in Spain.
However, Netflix is still far from reaching the heights of traditional audiovisual media companies in Spain – on average it registers 2.6 million unique users every day, while Antena3 gets around 11.4 million.
Netflix also pays far less tax than other media, television and communications companies in Spain, such as Atresmedia, which paid 28.6 million in taxes in 2021, and Mediaset, which paid 16.7 million.
