Netflix lets subscribers in Spain share their accounts... but in exchange for ads
The streaming service aims to give existing customers sharing capabilities at lower price, but with ads
Netflix put an end to shared accounts in Spain last year, and since then the streaming platform has offered three types of subscriptions for people who wish to enjoy their content.
These paid plans are the standard ad-supported plan (€5.49 per month), the standard plan (€12.99 per month) and the premium plan (€17.99 per month).
Here is what they offer:
- Standard with ads (5.49 euros per month): Includes ads, almost all movies and series are available, mobile games are unlimited, content can be watched on two compatible devices at the same time in Full HD and content can be downloaded on two compatible devices at the same time.
- Standard Plan (12.99 euros per month): It has the entire catalogue of multimedia content and games that can be viewed on up to two compatible devices at the same time in Full HD. It allows you to download the content and add up to an extra subscription for non-cohabitants for 5.99 euros per month more.
- Premium Plan (17.99 euros per month): Offers the entire multimedia and games catalogue that can be viewed on up to four devices at the same time in Ultra HD. It allows you to download content, has spatial audio and offers up to two extra subscriptions for non-cohabitants for 5.99 euros per month more each.
However, though the streaming platform has ended shared accounts, there is now the possibility of adding an extra subscriber to the same account.
Netflix explains on its official website, “The account holder can purchase an extra subscriber pass and invite people who do not live in their home to use Netflix.”
The streaming service continues, stating, “The extra subscriber will have their own profile, account, and passwords, but their subscription will be paid for by the person who invited them to join the platform.”
So, if someone would like a friend or family member to share the same account, if they have the standard plan, they will have to pay an additional 5.99 euros per month.
However, starting this Tuesday September 24, Netflix ​​launched a test to offer Spanish users who enjoy Netflix as extra subscribers a new, lower-priced option with advertising.
As such, from now on, account holders who want to add an extra subscriber to their accounts – both on the standard and premium plans – will have two options: without ads or with ads, from 4.99 euros per month.
