ARCHIVED - New IHU Covid variant detected in France: 12 positive cases so far
Investigators in France have discovered a new strain thought to have been imported from Cameroon
With the whole world firmly in the grip of the sixth coronavirus wave, the last thing anyone wants to hear is news of a new Covid variant, especially one with 46 different mutations. After the Alpha and Delta strains of the virus came the Omicron variant – the fastest spreading strain yet – and, now, a whole new mutation of Covid-19 has been detected by experts in France.
The so-called ‘patient zero’ of this new variant returned to Marseille (France) from the Republic of Cameroon recently and samples taken from this individual revealed a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 with 46 mutations and 37 deletions, which has been called IHU.
This atypical variation has been found in 12 Covid-positive patients so far, all of them in Marseille. However, the health authorities are not currently considering this new strain to be of interest or concern, though they will continue to monitor its evolution.
Investigators from the Aix-Marsella University are in charge of the study published about the new variant and they have explained that “these data are another example of the unpredictability of the appearance of variants of SARS-CoV-2 and of their introduction in a specific geographic area from abroad”.
