New Traffic Law in Spain lets learners take their theory test online
Those wanting a new Spanish driving licence can also take the theory test in English

A new Law on Traffic, Vehicle Circulation and Road Safety being passed in the Spanish Congress will mean those hoping to get a Spanish driving licence can practice for their theory test online. Previously, learner drivers in Spain had to physically go to a driving school to learn about Spanish road laws.
While the National Confederation of Driving Schools (CNAE) is upset because it undermines their business, Miguel González-Gallarza from the Platform of Digital Driving Schools (PAD) feels that the new regulations are “a good thing, a step forward for the whole sector and for citizens in general”.
For Mr González-Gallarza, “the main change that affects road safety training is that driving schools will have lower structural costs, as they will have fewer premises obligations and this will make the business in general more profitable.” This is a good thing for those who want to practise their driving theory test, because “it is most likely that the cost of the licence will also be reduced for them because the structural costs that will be reduced for business can also be passed on to consumers”.
It is possible to take the Spanish driving theory test in English, but not the practical test. This will be music to the ears of those UK citizens resident in Spain whose British driving licences will no longer be valid after February 28 2022 due to Brexit, and who will have to retake their driving test in Spain to get a Spanish licence. To do a practical test in Spain, you must be able to understand Spanish to follow the instructions of the driving instructor.
Changes to driving laws in Spain
This new law about driving tests is in addition to a recent Traffic Law stating that cameras will need to be installed on all rearview mirrors for new cars in 2022 and that all taxis must have breathalysers in them which the taxi drivers use to prove they haven’t been drinking before the car can start.
