ARCHIVED - Norwegian Airlines recovers with new flights from Spain this summer
The airline has reopened its Barcelona base and is looking into restarting flights in the Canary Islands
After facing bankruptcy during the coronavirus pandemic and closing its long-haul service even before this due to financial difficulties, Norwegian Airlines are back in business in Spain, opening new summer routes from Barcelona and setting their sights on the Canary Islands.
The carrier reopened its Barcelona base on Monday May 1, although for the time being will only operate between May and October. Nevertheless, this long-awaited return will result in the creation of 65 direct jobs in the city and will offer travellers flights to eight destinations in four Nordic countries.
Norwegian’s CEO, Geir Karlsen, confirmed that "the market is working very well" and revealed this week that the airline is now considering reopening its bases on the Canary Islands as well.
The carrier is the second major airline to set its sights on the Spanish islands, with Ryanair re-establishing its routes with the Canaries later this year.
Jet2
Staying with the Canary Islands and Jet2Holidays now offers customers a handy new service whereby they can check in their luggage direct from the hotel, allowing passengers to soak up the last of the sun instead of lugging bags and navigating lengthy queues at the airport.
The Resort Flight Check-in scheme was launched back in 2016 and the tour operator has confirmed that it will again be available in more than 130 hotels in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura this year.
CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, Steve Heapy, believes this service will "make a difference" when passengers are choosing an airline to travel with this summer, adding that "being able to enjoy as much time as possible, even the last day, without dragging suitcases, it's something that customers will appreciate a lot."
