ARCHIVED - Official complaints to airlines expected to increase by 40 per cent this Easter
Passengers in Spain submit the most claims in relation to delays, cancellations, overbooking and lost luggage
Easter this year runs from March 31 until April 10 and many people will take advantage of the school and work break to travel abroad. But with the increased traffic comes increased problems and Reclaimo has estimated that airlines will receive between 40% and 50% more complaints this Holy Week.
The specialist company has good reason to make this prediction, since a whopping 60% more claims were made against carriers this January and February compared to last year and with around 25% more people now catching flights, the issues can only get worse.
Naturally enough, more people travelling is going to lead to a sharp rise in complaints over delays, cancellations, overbooking and lost luggage, and the data shows that claims during Easter are going up every year.
Official complaints to airlines about lost luggage and overbooking skyrocketed by between 80% and 90% during Holy Week 2022 compared to the same period in 2021, while claims in relation to delays grew by 50%. Of course, it’s difficult to compare a ‘normal’ year with pandemic air traffic, but the numbers are still extraordinary.
Given the ongoing industrial disputes across Spain it will probably come as no surprise that the airlines that dealt with the highest number of unhappy customers during Easter 2022 were Vueling (+75%) and Ryanair (+40%).
Even though the aviation sector has been rebounding strongly, the level of traffic registered today still represents just 86% of the business that existed before the pandemic. Based on the current figures, Eurocontrol predicts that 2023 will close with 83-98% of the traffic in 2019.
