ARCHIVED - One in five Spanish residents has been given at least one dose of a Covid vaccine
The first vaccines by Janssen, which are rolling out to the Spanish regions this week, will help increase the vaccination rate even more.
The vaccination campaign continues apace in Spain and the latest figures reported by the Ministry of health indicate that more than one in five residents have now had at least one dose of a Covid vaccine.
The number of citizens to have received at least one dose of vaccine is now 10,141,949 which is 21.4 per cent of the country’s population. Moreover, 3,768,015 people or 7.9 per cent of the population, have had both doses and are therefore fully inoculated.
The total number of vaccines administered to date is 13,909,964.
Almost everyone older than 80 in Spain is now protected against the virus, which is particularly dangerous for elderly patients. 2,809,981 (or 99.2 per cent) of the 2,834,024 citizens in the 80-89 age bracket have received at least one dose of vaccine by either Pfizer or Moderna, and 1,905,062 (67.2 per cent) have had both doses.
The bracket below them, that of 70 to 79-year-olds, has been waiting patiently for their turn to come and is now in luck as the new, single-dose vaccines by Janssen that are starting to roll out to the Spanish regions will initially be used to help catch up with inoculating this group. At this point, 55.1 per cent of Spain’s 70-somethings have had one dose of vaccine, but only 3.8 per cent have had both.
Where the only group now receiving vaccines by AstraZeneca, those aged between 60 and 69, is concerned, 30.9 per cent have received at least one dose, and just over five per cent have had both.
Spain is due to take delivery of 300,000 doses of the vaccine by Janssen this month, following the EMA’s decision that its benefits far outweigh the risks of it causing blood clots in very rare cases. There are high hopes that this will speed up the vaccination rate as patients only need one dose.
