Only specialist doctors allowed to perform cosmetic procedures in Spain
The tightened regulations are in response to an "increase in cosmetic interventions" across Spain
In a bid to greatly improve patient safety, the Ministry of Health has announced that only specialist doctors will be allowed to perform cosmetic surgery operations from now on. This decision comes after a significant increase in cosmetic procedures and a growing demand for better control of this activity throughout Spain.
According to the Ministry of Health, "the modification is necessary due to the increase in cosmetic interventions and the need to ensure that they are carried out by qualified professionals."
The ministerial order, which was approved last week and published in Spain’s Official State Gazette (BOE) on Saturday September 21, means that going forward, only qualified doctors with a specialty in plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery or another related surgical or medical-surgical specialty will be allowed to perform cosmetic surgery operations.
This is very different to the UK and other parts of Europe, where practitioners with a variety of different qualifications are licensed to carry out invasive and often dangerous procedures like Botox.
But in Spain, the Ministry stressed that "the significant increase in cosmetic surgery and the proliferation of centres offering them have generated a growing social and health demand for better control of this activity."
Spain’s Minister of Health Mónica García explained that the new regulations have been driven in part by a recent tragedy in the Region of Murcia.
"This measure is, without a doubt, a huge victory for the family of Sara, a woman who unfortunately lost her life after undergoing an operation in a beauty centre that did not have the necessary guarantees."
Sara Gómez, a 39-year-old woman from Alcantarilla, died in January 2022 after liposculpture, a type of liposuction, was performed on her in Cartagena.
"Her family's struggle has been key to achieving this important change. We are taking an important step towards a safer health system, so that tragedies like Sara's do not happen again," she added.
