ARCHIVED - Ouigo arrives in Alicante in April with cut-price train tickets to Madrid
Tickets between Alicante and the Spanish capital will start at just 9 euros each way

Rail operator Ouigo has joined the high-speed rail race between Alicante and Madrid and will begin runs to the Spanish capital on April 27. The announcement comes just a day after Renfe began its Avlo train service on the same route and the competition from the French company is expected to push ticket prices down even further.
Ouigo will offer a total of four daily routes, two in each direction, with trains departing from the Alicante terminal at 2pm and 4pm. The journeys beginning at Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station in Madrid will leave at 10.15am and 12.51pm, respectively.
Tickets are already on sale for the new route, which general director of the operator, Hélène Valenzuela, has described as "a sustainable, comfortable and decisive means of transport".
Passengers can travel from Alicante to the capital for as little as 9 euros on one of Ouigo’s double-decker trains and commercial director Federico Pareja has promised that prices will remain permanently low.
At the time of booking, travellers will be able to pay for optional extras such as pets, additional hand luggage and the choice of seats.
Since arriving in Spain two years ago the rail operator has transported more than 5 million passengers and as of April 27, Ouigo will offer 14,000 weekly seats, a number it hopes to increase to 28,000 within the next few weeks.
In addition to Renfe and Ouigo, a third rail company, Iryo, will also operate high-speed trains between Alicante and Madrid from June 2.
