Officers from the Policía Local in the municipality of Elche detained a 55-year-old man last Thursday (April 8) for attempting to rob a 24-hour shop on Avenida de Novelda.
A Territorial Unit from the local police force was alerted by the store’s owner, who told the police that a man had hidden some products in his clothes and then attempted to leave the shop without paying.
When the woman asked the criminal to pay for the items, he tried to push the owner out of the way while hitting her, but she managed to escape the shop and lock the door behind her, trapping the thief inside.
Once officers reached the scene, they assessed the premises and verified the report with the shop owner.
They received an aggressive response from the would-be-thief and he had to be forcefully handcuffed.
The man was then transported to the police station to face charges after being given a medical assessment at the health centre.
