ARCHIVED - Panic buying floods petrol station forecourts in Gibraltar
The transport sector strike in Spain has led to fears of a supply crisis on the Rock
The panic buying which has plagued Spain for the past few days has reached the Rock, and Friday March 11 saw caravans of vehicles parked around the block from service stations in Gibraltar ahead of Monday’s trucker strike.
Motorists in Gibraltar have double the worry: that skyrocketing fuel costs on the mainland will soon reach them and that the transport sector’s indefinite industrial action will lead to shortages on the Rock.
With uncertainty rife, a spokesperson for the fuel company GibOil confirmed that they have stocked up over the weekend, just in case problems arise as a result of the work stoppage.

As news of the imminent strike emerged on Friday afternoon, the Royal Gibraltar Police had to deploy additional officers to control the mounting panic, and customers wishing to shop at Morissons were diverted to the car park via Harbour Views Road. Likewise, service station forecourts remained jam packed across Gibraltar for much of the day.
GibOli’s spokesperson stated that, while prices in Gibraltar are still much cheaper than in Spain, the costs are rising every day. Last week, it was reported that several service stations had exceeded two euros per litre on the peninsula, while on the Rock petrol prices have remained relatively steady at between 1.35 euros and 1.40 euros.
In contrast, a litre of unleaded in the UK has just surpassed 1.90 euros.
While the supply of diesel is pretty much guaranteed since it arrives in Gibraltar by sea, petrol is another story, and GibOil said the main priority at the moment is guaranteeing enough fuel for the public sector and emergency services in case supplies on the Rock run out.
