ARCHIVED - Police in Alfaz del Pi arrest Belgian fugitive wanted for an 18-million-euro scam
The 64-year-old scammer was hiding out in the province of Alicante using fake identification documents
The Policía Nacional in Alfaz del Pi, in the Marina Baja comarca, have detained a 64-year-old Belgian fugitive, who was wanted by Belgian authorities for an 18-million-euro scam involving sporting bets.
The criminal had a European Warrant for his arrest and extradition issued by Belgian authorities last May.
He was wanted for crimes committed in the city of Lieja, in Belgium, between 2008 and 2012, when he scammed thousands of people who wanted to make sports bets, with the help of his sister. The pair took the money and failed to place the bets, allegedly earning around 18 million euros.
The fugitive had chosen the province of Alicante in which to hide from the Belgian authorities, but the Policía Nacional were able to locate him in a property in Alfaz del Pi. When the man was arrested, he was carrying a fake identifying document, which he was using to evade detection in Spain.
The Belgian was awaiting trial in his native country for the crimes of falsifying documents, fraud and money laundering, for which he will face a three-year prison sentence.
