Popular fashion retailer closes its doors in Cartagena
C&A is shutting five stores in Spain resulting in the loss of around 60 jobs

Favourite clothing store C&A has announced the closure of five failing outlets in Spain, one of which is the popular shop in the Espacio Mediterráneo Shopping Centre in Cartagena. Due to unmanageable losses, the retailer will also shut up shop in Madrid, Leganés, Melilla and Marbella.
The brand employs around 90 people across these five stores but the Fetio union has specified that the closures should only impact between 60 and 70 workers following an agreement with C&A to redistribute certain staff, such as those over the age of 50 and employees with dependent relatives.
In this way, the union says it is dedicated to achieving “the best compensation for those affected and on obtaining a relocation plan for workers who are affected by this personnel adjustment.”
C&A explained that its decision to close the five stores was based on the “negative evolution of financial profitability” at these specific locations. Back in 2017, the company was forced to shut 23 stores in Spain and a further five in Portugal due to money problems, and around 300 jobs were lost.
Even with the latest round of closures, C&A still has almost 1,900 stores in 21 countries, and operates a total of 115 stores in Spain and Portugal with around 2,700 employees.
