Price of gas bottles shoots up in Spain just as cold snap hits
A canister of ‘butano’ gas has increased by 3.85% across Spain this week
Seemingly overnight, the weather in Spain has turned, switching from scorching summer days and nights to a distinctly autumnal chill. Just as this cold snap sets in, the Spanish government has announced that the price of butane or ‘butano’ gas bottles will be increasing from Tuesday September 17.
From this week, each gas canister will cost 15.93 euros, which represents a 3.85% price hike. The authorities review the price of bottled gas every two months on the third Tuesday of the month, and either increase or decrease the cost to the consumer, depending on the wider market.
This time around, the hike is due to a number of factors, including a 13.9% rise in the cost of raw materials, which is offset by falls in freight prices (-26.4%) and the slight appreciation of the euro against the dollar (+1.32%), according to sources from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
Bottled liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a mixture of hydrocarbons, mainly composed of butane, which serves as an alternative to piped natural gas for energy consumption in pressurised containers. It’s mostly seen in town and city centres and is commonly used in BBQs during the summer and in gas heaters in winter.
According to the government, around 64.5 million LPG gas bottles of different sizes are used in Spain each year. But this is actually a fuel in decline, since, from 2010 to 2021, total consumption of bottled LPG has decreased by more than 25%.
