ARCHIVED - Quarantine scrapped in Spain for Omicron close contacts
Fully vaccinated contacts will be asked to limit their movements for 10 days
When the new Covid strain, Omicron, surfaced almost three weeks ago, the health authorities in Spain decreed that anyone deemed a close contact of someone diagnosed with the variant would have to quarantine for 10 days, whether or not they were vaccinated. The Public Health Commission made a U-turn on Tuesday December 21, however, and confirmed that the double-jabbed wouldn’t have to self-isolate, but instead take precautionary measures and limit social interactions as much as possible.
This is in direct contrast to the requests made by the regional governments in Extremadura and Catalonia, who have asked that all those who have come into contact with Covid-positive patients, regardless of the strain, enter into quarantine.
Just yesterday Catalonia announced that it will be closing nightlife venues and implementing a curfew in an effort to stem the rapid spread of Omicron, which Spanish immunologist Alfredo Corell suggested could be as communicable as measles, the most contagious virus ever seen.
Despite this, the Ministry of Health has confirmed that fully vaccinated close contacts “will be told during this period of 10 days after the last contact with a confirmed case that they should limit their activities to the essential ones, reducing their social interactions as much as possible, scrupulously follow prevention measures such as the use of masks and carry out a close surveillance before the possible appearance of compatible symptoms.”
In line with these recommendations, health experts have also warned against the danger of false positives being produced by rapid, over-the-counter antigen tests, particularly in the case of the Omicron variant.
