ARCHIVED - Ryanair adds yet more routes to Spain ahead of the autumn-winter season
The news comes after the budget airline announced 21 new flights to Spain and Europe from the UK
Irish carrier Ryanair is eagerly anticipating a bumper autumn-winter season in Spain despite fears that the rising cost of airline tickets may be off-putting for customers, who are already feeling the pinch from increasing grocery, fuel and energy prices.
Just a few days after the budget airline announced 21 new routes from the UK, Michael O’Leary’s company has added yet more flights to Spain and Italy, this time originating at Newcastle airport.
Announcing the new Winter 2022 schedule on Wednesday September 7, Ryanair confirmed that it will be upping its routes from the northern UK airport from nine to 15, adding twice weekly flights to Barcelona, Cork, Milan Bergamo, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Riga in Latvia.
Ryanair’s director of commercial, Jason McGuinness, said the additional flights show "a big vote of confidence in the North East".
"It is now nine routes more than prior to Covid," he said. "We are going to double our passenger numbers in Newcastle pre and post Covid.
"We are delighted to continue our long-term development plan with Newcastle Airport in the Winter season to give our customers the most options for travel year-round, at the lowest possible fares, developing traffic, jobs and economic support to the area."
To facilitate the expansion, Ryanair will base two aircraft at Newcastle full-time to run its 80 weekly flights.
What’s more, even though the airline has recently warned that the era of cut-price air travel is over, anyone who books a flight from Newcastle before Friday September 9 could bag a bargain for as little as £21.99.
Ryanair has been plagued by strike action across Spain all summer, though the airline has kept disruptions to a minimum. The carrier is currently in pay negotiations with cabin crew in the UK:
"Across Europe we have agreements in place with at least 90% of our people for pay increments to 2026," Mr McGuinness commented.
