ARCHIVED - Ryanair in Spain found guilty of staff rights violations during cabin crew strikes
The Labour report concludes that the airline violated the right to strike of its workers in Spain
Irish budget airline Ryanair is in deep water having been found guilty of several workers’ rights violations during the cabin crew strikes in Spain this summer. One of the unions representing the flight attendants, USO, initiated legal action against Michael O’ Leary’s company, claiming the actions of the carrier violated the right to strike, and the Labour Inspectorate has agreed.
The union confirmed in a statement on Wednesday November 30 that it is now confident that the almost 40 dismissals of crew members carried out by Ryanair for supporting the strike will become null and void.
The Labour Inspectorate has issued several acts of serious infringement and one very serious against Ryanair for violation of fundamental rights at the airports of Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga, Alicante, Girona and the Balearic Islands.
Ryanair’s worst offence, according to the report, was bringing in staff from other European and third countries to cover flight attendants on work stoppages. The low-cost airline has also been accused of abusing the Spanish government’s minimum services rule, thereby discouraging staff from exercising their right to strike.
Ryanair now faces fines ranging between 3,751 euros and 7,500 euros for serious infractions and between 120,006 euros and 225,018 euros for the very serious offences.
And this may only be the tip of the iceberg for the carrier, since inspections of its treatment of staff during the industrial action have yet to be completed at A Coruña, Seville and Valencia Airports.
