Ryanair vows to invest 5 billion in Spanish travel
The budget airline plans to add hundreds of flights to and from Spain over the next 7 years
Spanish President Pedro Sánchez met with the CEO of Ryanair Michael O’Leary last week to discuss the airline’s ambitious investment plan in this country in the coming years.
The low-cost carrier intends to spend in the region of 5 billion euros between now and 2030 to increase flights, improve airports and planes and boost tourism and the economy in Spain.
This historic agreement foresees a significant increase in Ryanair’s presence in Spain, with the goal of going from 55 million to 77 million passengers, the expansion of routes from 730 to more than a thousand by 2030, the incorporation of 33 more sustainable aircraft with a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions, and the opening of five new bases.
During the meeting at Moncloa Palace, President Sánchez thanked Michael O’ Leary for Ryanair’s continued commitment to Spain, which he said highlights the country’s economic stability and potential.
Spain was already showing record tourism numbers at the end of 2023, with Malaga Airport in particular exceeding all growth expectations, but Ryanair is taking a special interest in strengthening several of the smaller regional airports too.
The Irish airline currently employs around 6,500 staff in Spain and operates more than 700 routes to 29 countries, with 82 routes in the domestic market. This agreement is seen as a historic milestone that promises to boost tourism and contribute to the economic growth of Spain in the coming years.
