What is salmonella?
Salmonella is a bacterium that lives in the intestines of both people and animals, and outbreaks of poisonings occur when it contaminates water or food.
The foods most susceptible to contamination with salmonella are raw or undercooked eggs, raw or undercooked meat (especially poultry), milk and dairy products, although it has been found in raw vegetables irrigated with contaminated water, as well as in shellfish.
People who ingest a contaminated product will usually develop symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhoea within about 12 to 36 hours, but symptoms can appear much sooner.
Salmonella poisoning usually resolves itself without major complications within two and seven days, but it can be very dangerous in young children, the elderly and the sick, particularly because of the risk of severe dehydration.
