ARCHIVED - Santa Pola fences off zones for San Juan bonfire celebrations: June 23-24
The lighting of San Juan bonfires outside the designated areas along the Alicante coastline is banned

As the mercury rises to extreme levels in Alicante province, the likes of Elche Town Hall has taken the controversial decision to ban San Juan bonfires on its beaches completely amid concerns over fire risks and overcrowding.
But in the neighbouring Alicante municipality of Santa Pola, the Town Hall has instead fenced off designated areas on Levante beach and Gran Playa for the celebrations on Thursday night, June 23 into Friday morning.
The zones will be monitored by Santa Pola Local Police, the Guardia Civil and Civil Protection throughout the festivities to prevent flouting and ensure no "dangerous" materials or wood with nails are discarded along the beaches.
"It is expressly forbidden to make fires outside the delimited, fenced and controlled areas," warned the Town Hall.
The Night of San Juan is traditionally celebrated with bonfires (hogueras) and fireworks as a way of marking midusmmer. Fire is the main element of the festivities due to the ancient belief that fire cleanses away the old and brings new beginnings.
The Covid pandemic has put paid to the historic festivities for the last two years, but they are slowly and surely making a return across Spain.
