ARCHIVED - Scaffolding to cover Murcia Cathedral for ten months
Guided tours of the Cathedral will continue for the duration of the restoration
The iconic facade of Murcia Cathedral will be covered in scaffolding for the next ten months as restoration works continue on the emblematic Baroque frontage, according to the Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena. While the recovery work is being undertaken, the extensive double walkway system will be erected so that visitors can continue to enjoy guided tours of the Cathedral.
Last year, a portion of the Cathedral had to be condoned off after loose masonry fell from the external facade of the building. A study determined that the exterior deterioration has been caused by nesting pigeons and their excrement, as well as an accumulation of water due to faulty pipes.
The initiative still needs to be given the final green light by the General Directorate of Cultural Assets of the Region and while the official end-date can for now only be guessed at, the recovery project director and architect, Juan de Dios de la Hoz, believes it should take no longer than the proposed 10 months.
The total budget allocated to the cathedral is 1,200,000 euros.
One of the entrances will have to remain closed for the duration of the restoration but none of the large images that make up the facade will have to be removed. In addition, four quarries containing the same stone as the original building have been located in Murcia so the integrity of the Cathedral will not be compromised.
