Scottish flight forced into emergency landing in Spain after running low on fuel
The Jet2 plane carrying almost 200 passengers had to circle over Mallorca due to stormy weather conditions
Passengers aboard a Jet2 flight from Glasgow underwent a terrifying ordeal at the end of August when the pilot of the jet was forced to make an emergency landing after it almost ran out of fuel.
Flight LS189 to Palma in Mallorca, carrying 187 passengers and six crew, was due to touch down after two and a half hours but a storm raging through Spain meant that the aircraft was ordered into a holding pattern and remained circling above the airport.
After almost an hour at 35,000 feet, the pilot realised that the fuel reserves were running desperately low and radioed air traffic control to request an emergency landing. According to official sources, his distress call indicated that “if they remained in flight, they would land with less than 1,159 kilos of fuel.”
As the jet had already begun eating into its emergency reserves, the pilot was given priority landing and the plane touched down in Mallorca three hours and 26 minutes after takeoff.
Airline authorities have launched an investigation into the frightening incident.
A spokesperson clarified: “We can confirm that flight LS189 from Glasgow to Palma did not run out of fuel. At no point was anybody’s safety compromised and the aircraft landed as normal.
“Due to the severe weather conditions affecting the island of Mallorca on Sunday, August 27, many aircraft due to land at Palma Airport were held for longer than usual at the request of air traffic control.
“We are fully supporting the authorities with their investigation, as well as conducting our own investigation.”
