ARCHIVED - Spain and Portugal submit joint bid to host 2030 FIFA World Cup
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
If successful, it will be the first time the World Cup has been held in Spain since 1982
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Portuguese Football Federations (FPF) have thrown their hat into the ring to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, formally submitting their joint application after agreeing on 14 venues, 11 of which are in Spain with the remaining three in Portugal.
Fernando Gomes, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, and his Spanish counterpart Luis Rubiales, ratified an agreement signed last October to promote a joint bid.
"The governments of Spain and Portugal wish to express their desire and commitment to host the 2030 World Cup," the agreement said.

If they win the bid, it will be the first time Spain has hosted the World Cup since 1982 and Portugal’s first time ever, but they are open to stiff competition. The UK and the Republic of Ireland have previously stated interest, and a four-nation South American team may be on the cards with Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile, while China and South Korea "may also be mulling a bid."
FIFA plans to select the 2030 host in 2024.
"A message to the [other] national federations: if you give us your trust, when you come to our countries you are going to find an unforgettable experience," Rubiales said recently.
