Spain beefs up anti-terrorist measures due to multiple attacks in Europe
An expert committee in Spain has employed a number of safety measures to reinforce alert level 4
Last week’s attack of Palestinian militant group Hamas on Israel has sparked a number of incidents around the world, and in the past few days the murder of a teacher in France and of two Swedish football fans in Brussels has spurred the Ministry of the Interior of Spain into action.
The country’s anti-terrorist alert system has been set at level 4 (the maximum is level 5) for some time now and while this will not be raised, a series of “complimentary measures” will be introduced to ensure safety within Spain.
More than 500 Spanish holidaymakers and expats have already been flown out of Israel on two chartered military jets and have returned home safely.
Each week, the terrorist threat assessment table meets to discuss what, if any, actions are required. This formidable team is chaired by acting Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska and made up of anti-terrorist experts from the National Police, the Guardia Civil, Mossos d'Esquadra, Ertzaintza, the National Intelligence Center (CNI), National Security and the Armed Forces.
The agreed complimentary measures are designed to reinforce the current level 4 alert and include beefing up security at “especially sensitive points throughout the national territory.”
While no direct threat has been made in Spain, the country has been targeted by terrorists in the past and last year, letter bombs were sent to several high-standing officials and the Ukrainian Embassy.
According to the Ministry, anti-terrorist level 4 implies “a series of strict measures to reinforce security devices and control and monitoring capabilities by all the organisations involved”.
“Among other factors, certain special units are activated, protection devices are reinforced, surveillance measures on critical infrastructure are increased, cyber surveillance measures are coordinated and periodic evaluations are carried out on all these measures.”
This Friday October 20, a high-level police operation spanning from Barcelona to Granada has resulted in the arrest of four people for spreading messages of jihad and trying to indoctrinate others with radical Islamist sentiments. At the same time, the movements of 12 more jihadist returnees from the war in Syria and Iraq are being closely monitored.
