ARCHIVED - Spain recommends getting flu and Covid jab together if possible
The fourth coronavirus vaccine will be rolled out in Spain next week
Many health experts are predicting a resurgence of influenza this winter now that most of the anti-Covid restrictions have been lifted in Spain and the latest recommendations from the Public Health Commission issued on September 22 are that people get both the flu jab and coronavirus vaccination at the same time, “provided that both vaccines are available”.
Several communities called for a joint vaccination campaign earlier in the summer, but the timing just hasn’t worked out for an official drive. Flu jabs will be most widely available by mid-October (earlier in many regions) while the authorities will begin administering the fourth coronavirus inoculation to people over 80 and those living in nursing homes on Monday September 26.
From here, the second booster will be offered to adults aged 60+, residents of other disability centres and under 60s with risk conditions.
All staff working in health centres, care homes, Primary Care, hospitals and other medical settings will also be offered the fourth dose.
The key difference with this Covid jab is that is has been specifically designed to target the Omicron variants, according to the Minister of Health.
In the event that doses of the flu and Covid vaccines are available at the same time the Public Health Commission has reiterated that these inoculations are safe to be administered with other common treatments, such as the pneumococcal vaccine.
If you are concerned that you have coronavirus or the flu, pharmacies across Spain now sell over-the-counter self-diagnostic antigen tests which can detect both ailments at the same time.
