ARCHIVED - Spain vaccination update September 13: more than 35 million now double jabbed
Spain steps up efforts to vaccinate all those between the ages of 12 and 19
With the cumulative incidence rate of coronavirus cases creeping ever lower and hospital pressure easing daily, Covid experts attribute the improving data to the steady pace of the vaccination campaign. Spain has maintained its vaccine momentum throughout September after a slow start to August, and according to the latest data published by the Ministry of Health on Monday September 13, a total of 35,300,384 people are now fully immunised, representing 74.7 per cent of the population. In addition, 37,216,507 people, or 78.4 per cent have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Unfortunately, herd immunity remains elusive and President Pedro Sánchez has suggested that it may be necessary to fully vaccine more than 90 per cent of the population rather than the original 70 per cent to ensure Covid in Spain is kept in check.
The push to double jab the younger population, who have been hardest hit during the fifth wave of the pandemic and continue to be the group responsible for the majority of infections, continues and now 58.4 per cent of those aged between 12 and 19 have been fully immunised. This is a big step in the right direction compared to the 45.5 per cent on the same day last week. Every community in Spain has redoubled its efforts to vaccinate this group, with Asturias leading the way on 70.2 per cent. Cantabria is lagging behind with just 28.9 per cent but every region has made significant improvements in the past 7 days.
As of this Monday, more than 90 per cent of all those aged 50 and above have been double vaccinated, while the most vulnerable population, people over the age of 80, now have a 100 per cent vaccination rate.
Double vaccinations by age group
- 80+: 100 per cent / 2,896,320 people
- 70-79: 98.6 per cent / 3,905,620 people
- 60-69: 96.5 per cent / 5,151,937 people
- 50-59: 92.9 per cent / 6,537,358 people
- 40-49: 85 per cent / 6,708,503 people
- 30-39: 71.2 per cent / 4,436,173 people
- 20-29: 68.6 per cent / 3,393,372 people
- 12-19: 58.4 per cent / 2,271,101 people
While Spain’s Health Minister, Carolina Darias, confirmed last week that a third booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine would be made available to those with compromised immune systems, Covid experts remain at loggerheads about the necessity of this. The World Health Organisation has advised against administering a third dose until every country has achieved a 14 per cent vaccination rate, while studies by both Pfizer and Moderna have shown that their vaccines have a satisfactory efficacy rate against strains such as the Delta variant.
Meanwhile, Spain looks likely to begin producing its own vaccine next month, which is currently going through trials and proving to be very effective against new mutations.
