Spain weather forecast Feb 5-8: Almost widespread rain by the end of the week
The arrival of an Atlantic front in the middle of the week will bring a drastic change in weather to most of Spain
Weather outlook on Thursday February 8
A lingering anticyclone has resulted in settled, bright and sunny weather in most of Spain over the last week or so but according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), this balmy episode is coming to a close with the arrival of an Atlantic front later in the week.
This drastic change will bring a panorama of rain and snow to much of the country, coinciding with a DANA (upper-level isolated depression) that is due to hit the north Spain on Tuesday February 6.
Widespread cloud cover is expected in the coming days and the rainfall will sweep further west towards the weekend, although the Mediterranean coast should escape the worst of the weather.
Monday February 5
Anticyclonic conditions are forecast to continue in Spain and the Balearic Islands, although the approaching DANA will bring increased medium and high cloud cover.
No substantial variations in temperature are expected, but frosts could occur in the Pyrenees and the south of the country, possibly extending to other mountainous regions in the north and east of Spain. Dispersed frosts may also reach the northern plateau and eastern parts of the southern plateau.
Tuesday February 6
On Tuesday the DANA is expected to cross the country from west to east, leaving behind a trail of medium and high cloud cover. As it moves eastward, cloudiness is likely to decrease in the west, only to increase again towards the end of the day in western Galicia, resulting in overcast skies and a chance of scattered showers. There is also a low probability of weak and isolated showers in the afternoon in the Cantabrian mountain range.
Daytime temperatures will rise in the southern half of the Mediterranean coast, while falling in the rest of the eastern half of Spain. Minimum temperatures will also increase in the south.
Wednesday February 7
Just as the DANA passes out of range, an Atlantic front will sweep in from the west on Wednesday, leaving behind mostly cloudy skies in the north and northwest, as well as scattered and occasionally heavy rainfall in the west towards the evening.
In the rest of the country, slightly cloudy skies will become more overcast as the hours go by.
Daytime temperatures will increase in the Canary Islands, Cantabrian Sea and Levante coasts and will decrease on the Atlantic slope but there will be a noticeable drop across the board in the evening.
Thursday February 8
The Atlantic front will continue to dictate the weather on Thursday but at the moment its path is fairly uncertain. What is known is that the cloudiness will increase from west to east during the morning and the entire country will be overcast by the evening.
Rainfall is expected in the west of the country, the Cantabrian area and the western Pyrenees, and while it could spread further the Mediterranean is unlikely to be hit.
Maximum temperatures will tend to decrease in the northwest, increasing in the southeast, and without significant changes in the rest of Spain.
