Spain will scrap physical ITV stickers in windshields
Drivers throughout Spain will soon be allowed to carry proof of the test on their mobiles
The DGT has announced plans to scrap ITV (Technical Inspection of Vehicles) stickers for car and motorbike windscreens. In Spain, the ITV is similar to the UK’s MOT or Ireland’s NCT and is a periodic test to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy.
At the moment, drivers are given a sticker when they pass the ITV test which must be clearly displayed on the windshield. While the labels are small, many feel they are unsightly and the sticky residue often leaves a mark on the glass.
Going forward, the traffic authorities want the sticker to become electronic so that drivers can carry it on their phones instead in the MiDGT app, much the same as the Spanish driving licence.
No firm date has been given for the change but the DGT has hinted that it will be sometime this year.
However, it’s not driver preference that has prompted the move but rather environmental considerations. Moving the system from paper to electronic will save the printing of millions of stickers annually, which will of course save a considerable amount of money for the traffic authorities as well.
While the decision to move away from physical stickers appears to have been made, many motorists have expressed some concern about their privacy. These issues were also raised with the launch of the MiDGT app, with some drivers worried that their personal information would be compromised if they lost their phones, for example.
It seems likely, though, that the problems will be overcome in a similar way to the vehicle’s technical sheet, which can now be carried exclusively on mobiles and doesn’t have to be kept in the car.
