ARCHIVED - Spain experiences third warmest December in 60 years
Most of Spain also experienced less rainfall than usual

With wet and windy weather spreading across much of Spain this week the spring-like conditions at the end of 2021 feel like a distant memory, but last December was in fact the third warmest in 60 years, surpassed only in 1989 and 2015.
According to Aemet, December was a “very hot” month in Spain, with the average temperature across the country more than 1.9 degrees warmer than usual for that time of year.
In fact, regions such as western Andalucía, the Valencian Community and Murcia saw the Mercury spike to more than 3 degrees hotter than normal.
The final month of 2021 also experienced a record dry period with an average rainfall of just 62mm, 75% less precipitation than what would be expected and the 12th driest December of the 19th century.
While sun lovers undoubtedly basked in the mild weather over Christmas and New Year, the rising temperatures and lack of rain spelled disaster for farmers, many of whom are sacrificing their valuable crops to ongoing drought conditions.
The Balearic and Canary Islands experienced the most dramatic dry spells in December, while 200% more rain actually fell on the Cantabrian coast.
