ARCHIVED - Spain reaches milestone 70 per cent vaccination target
More than 66 million doses of the Covid vaccine have been administered in Spain to date
Wednesday September 1 was a red-letter day for Spain as the Ministry of Health announced that, eight months after the coronavirus vaccination campaign began, 70 per cent of the population – some 33,376,693 people – have now been fully immunised against the disease. In addition, 77 per cent of people, 36,533,328, have received one jab.
On April 6, Spain’s President Pedro Sánchez set the ambitious target of 70 per cent by the end of August, a figure which at the time was hoped would provide herd immunity against the virus. Although that date has only been narrowly missed, most experts are now in agreement that with the emergence of more virulent strains, such as the Delta variant, aiming to vaccinate 85 per cent of the population might be a more prudent move.
The vaccination rate naturally varies quite a bit across populations, with 100 per cent of people over 80 now double jabbed, having been prioritised at the beginning of the campaign. At the other end of the spectrum are those aged between 12 and 19 years, of whom only 32.2 per cent are fully immunised. The next age bracket, 20 to 29, almost doubles this vaccination figure at 60 per cent.
Based on the data collected between December 27 2020 and September 1, a total of 66,130,220 doses of the vaccine have been administered in Spain, accounting for 89.4 per cent of the total jabs received.
The Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, stressed the need to ‘continue vaccinating’, particularly with respect to the younger population, and confirmed that this week alone Spain will receive a further three million Moderna vaccines as well as 1,700,000 Pfizer doses.
Responding to the claim by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) that there is no urgent need for a booster dose of the vaccine in the general population, Darias commented that a final decision will be made in Spain by next week. In the meantime, the Spanish government has confirmed that it has purchased an additional 2.2 million doses of the Novavax vaccine along with half a million Sanofi doses in anticipation of third jabbing those with weakened immune systems.
