Spanish chef crowned best in the world for third year running
The avant-garde restaurant in Madrid offers a fresh take on Asian fusion
The seventh edition of the The Best Chef Awards took place in Yucatan on November 20 and while the prestigious event might have been held outside of Europe, the top prize lies firmly with the Spanish.
The coveted list showcased the 100 best chefs in the world and for the third consecutive year, first place was awarded to Spain’s very own Dabiz Muñoz, from the avant-garde fining dining restaurant DiverXO.
A shell-shocked Muñoz, who gave his acceptance speech in English, said that he never imagined winning the first time, much less the following two. As the young gastronomic genius’s nerves grew, he switched to Spanish, adding: “Spain is an incredible place thanks to cooking legends, thanks to them there is a chef like me.”
It was certainly a bumper celebration for Spain: four other Spaniards made it into the top 10, the most notable being Albert Adrià, from Enigma in Barcelona, which took second place.
Boasting three Michelin stars along with three Best Chef awards, DiverXO in Madrid is renowned for its creative approach to cooking, fusing both Asian and Spanish influences, and surprising and delighting diners with innovative pairings and unusual presentations.
On the back of this success, Chef Muñoz opened StreetXO, also in Madrid, a more casual concept and Goxo in Barcelona and Murcia, a creative and upmarket take on fast-food favourites.
