Spanish islands threaten all-out ban of drunk tourists
Badly-behaved Brits could soon be blacklisted in Mallorca and Ibiza
Drunk and disorderly holidaymakers could soon face expulsion from the Balearic Islands and a temporary ban if new legislation proposed by the local government is passed.
This has been confirmed by tourism boss Jaume Bauza, who said that part of the changes being considered involves blacklisting certain anti-social tourists from holiday hotspots like Mallorca and Ibiza, where countless incidents have been reported over the summer months.
At the beginning of 2020, a hugely controversial ‘drunken tourism’ decree was passed that affects popular destinations with the Brits, such as Magaluf and San Antonio. In these resorts, holidaymakers caught ‘balconing’ will be turfed out of their hotels and could be fined thousands. There’s also a limit on the amount of booze available in all-inclusives and drink-fuelled activities like party boats and pub crawls are banned.
Now, the Balearic Island government wants to alter the legislation and apply it to all four islands: Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. And part of the new ‘responsible tourism’ decree relates to shipping badly-behaved tourists back home and prohibiting them from returning, depending on the level of “crime or infraction committed.”
Explaining that the severity of the punishment would be “regulated in the decree” Mr Bauza assured that “nothing’s being ruled out or confirmed at this stage”.
“Then it will need to have a legal framework,” he said. “The main thing is to target companies as well, but above all those people who behave in a way that is not tolerable, here or anywhere.”
The news will hardly be welcomed by tourists who already face a barrage of restrictions when travelling to the Balearics, but the islands aren’t the only place in Spain trying to clean up their image. Last month, Seville followed in the footsteps of Malaga by putting a stop to rowdy hen and stag parties and placing an outright ban on walking the streets half naked or in underwear alone.
