ARCHIVED - Spanish trucker strike indefinitely called off
Platform representing truck drivers in Spain says their industrial action has been thwarted by a "campaign of harassment”
Hardly a day has passed since the strike of the self-employed transport workers began across Spain and the industrial action has already been suspended. The National Platform for the Defence of the Transport Sector, the association that initially called the strike beginning on midnight of Sunday November 13, claims that the group has faced a “relentless campaign of harassment and take-down” since the stoppages began.
The last major protest by this trucker association was a 20-day campaign in March. The action created rifts between the self-employed drivers and those who wanted to continue working, often fraught interactions than even resulted in an accidental shooting of a protestor in Madrid.
According to the platform, the strike has been called off due to a lack of general support and a “campaign” against the action from its main clients, the shippers, as well as business owners, unions, several political parties and even some of the mainstream media.
Since talks of more stoppages came to the fore no association of carriers had supported the strike called by the platform. Moreover, the National Committee for Road Transport (CNTC), the main advisory body for the sector and the one with which the government prefers to dialogue, is opposed to the move.
Fears abounded that the indefinite strike called by the truckers would severely impact the supply chain during Black Friday and, more especially, Christmas. For now, at least, truckers are back on the roads, but the Platform insisted today that it will continue “against all odds defending and fighting” to improve working conditions in the sector.
