ARCHIVED - The end of the coronavirus pandemic is in sight, according to WHO
The world “has never been so close to the end of the Covid-19 pandemic”
As the weather turns cooler and the winter begins closing in, health experts around the globe are keeping a keen eye trained on the evolution of the health crisis. Most virologists in Spain agree that the seventh wave of coronavirus is all but over, since daily infections are in steady decline and the incidence rate is swiftly moving out of the danger zone.
Buoying hopes even further, director general of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated confidently on September 14 that the world “has never been so close to the end of the Covid-19 pandemic,” after last week’s global statistics showed the lowest number of deaths since March 2020.
"We are not there yet, but the end of the pandemic is in sight," Mr Tedros said at his weekly press conference, while in the same breath cautioning nations to remain vigilant.
“A marathon runner does not stop when he begins to see the finish line", he advised. "To stop now is to risk more variants of the coronavirus, more deaths, more problems and more uncertainty."
To push through this “final stretch,” the WHO has issued an advisory plan for national health policies which is largely based on the evidence gathered over the last 31 months of the pandemic and aims firstly to save lives, but also to protect health networks and reduce Covid impact on the economy and society as a whole.
Among the recommendations, according to Mr Tedros, are investing in vaccinations, especially in risk groups, the continuity of laboratory coronavirus tests to control possible new variants, and improvements in health systems.
More than 10 million batches of Moderna and Pfizer vaccines have now arrived in Spain and fourth doses will soon be rolled out to those over the age of 80 and people in nursing homes.
