Thieves toss luxury BMW into Orihuela Costa canal
The car was dumped after an attempted robbery gone wrong in Lomas de Cabo Roig
Pedestrians strolling along the Tajo-Segura transfer canal between Orihuela Costa and Pilar de la Horadada got quite the surprise on Thursday September 27 when a BMW was spotted submerged in the canal.
It’s not every day you see a luxury car taking an unexpected swim, after all.
As it turns out, this wasn't some bizarre parking fail or a mistaken shortcut. According to the Orihuela Local Police, the BMW was actually involved in an attempted robbery the night before in Lomas de Campoamor.
The thieves, clearly in a rush to ditch the evidence, thought tossing the car into the canal would be a clever escape plan.
As it turns out, it really wasn’t, as the lack of any rain to speak of in the last few months means the water is only a couple of metres deep – certainly not enough to hide a car.
Now, the Guardia Civil has stepped in to investigate, while workers from the Segura Hydrographic Confederation are busy draining the affected section of the canal to fish out the car.
