ARCHIVED - This is how to get extra savings at the pump in Spain... but only with BP, Repsol and Cepsa
Petrol stations across Spain are already offering discounts on fuel through a loyalty card system
The Council of Ministers in Spain is meeting on Tuesday March 29 to discuss a range of measures aimed at appeasing the country’s striking truckers and easing the burden the war in Ukraine has placed on citizens by inflating fuel and electricity prices.
One of the measures Pedro Sanchez plans to introduce is a reduction of 20 cents per litre on petrol and diesel costs at the pump, something which many of the big players like Repsol, Cepsa and BP seem to have anticipated and actually beaten the government to.
Some 3,300 Repsol garages across Spain are already offering a discount of 10 cents per litre until June 30 (the same date the government has set) for customers who choose to pay with their Solred card, while British company BP has announced that from April to June, it will apply discounts on fuel prices of 14 cents per litre for carriers and 12 for individuals. In the latter case, customers who have the My BP card and adhere to the 'Ahorro de Locos' promotion will benefit.
For its part, Cepsa offers a direct discount of 10 cents per litre from April 1 to June 30 at its 1,500 service stations in Spain for customers adhering to the 'Because You Come Back' program.
President Sanchez indicated that his 20 cents reduction will be split, with the State contributing 15 cents and oil companies the other 5 cents. But how does this affect customers already using the service station’s loyalty cards?
None of the major filling station owners have clarified the matter yet, but it would appear that, when the discounts announced by the government are applied, drivers without a loyalty card would simply receive 20 cents per litre off when filling up.
However, holders of the Repsol card, for example, should in theory obtain a discount of 25 cents per litre -15 is provided by the Executive and 10 by the oil company- the same as at a Cepsa station by joining the current promotion. In the case of BP, the discount for having the company card would go up to 27 cents per litre.
According to the latest data from the European Union Oil Bulletin, the average price of petrol in Spain is 1.813 euros per litre; while diesel is listed at 1.795 euros. Thus, filling the tank of an average car 55-litre car today costs 99.70 euros - 27 euros more than a year ago. In the case of diesel, a tank is now 33.30 euros more expensive.
