Two earthquakes recorded in Andalusia, but no connection with Morocco, say experts
The two tremors in Seville and Jaén are not linked to the earthquake in Morocco

Two earthquakes, each measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, have occurred in different parts of Andalucía. The two were registered in Castillo de Locubín (Jaén) and Lebrija (Seville) this Friday September 8.
The director of the Andalusian Institute of Geophysics and Earthquake Disaster Prevention, Inmaculada Serrano Bermejo, has stated the two are not related to each other, and also have nothing to do with the earthquake that has killed more than 2,000 people in Morocco.
The Moroccan earthquake occurred in the south of the African country on Saturday evening, and could be felt as far away as Portugal and Algeria, but not in Spain. The Andalusian earthquake expert explained that if the Moroccan earthquake had had its epicentre in the north of the country and not in the Atlas Mountains, it could be considered to be related to the tremors in Jaén and Seville, but in reality this is not the case because the two plates affected are not directly related.
The director of the Andalusian Institute of Geophysics, based in Granada, recalled that there is a greater connection between the North and Andalusia and gave the example of the 1994 Al Hoceima earthquake and the tremors in various towns in Almeria, such as Adra.
She added that although the African fault exerts a thrust from the European fault, earthquakes such as the two recorded this weekend in Andalucía respond more to local fault stresses such as the weight of sediments.
