ARCHIVED - Two Spanish restaurants ranked among five best in the world
One Andalucia eatery was given the nod for Best Sustainable Restaurant on the planet

Spain is well-renowned for its gastronomic delights but it’s quite an accolade to be acknowledged by some of the most important chefs, restaurateurs and food critics around the globe. This is where two Spanish restaurants find themselves, after being placed among the top five best eateries in the world this week.
In a ceremony at London’s Old Billingsgate Exchange on Monday July 18, Disfrutar in Barcelona was awarded the bronze medal, moving up from fifth place last year in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, while fourth place was given to Madrid’s DiverXo, by Dabiz Muñoz, which thus rises from position 20 to the top 5 of the prestigious ranking.
The overall winner for 2022 was the Danish Geranium, by chef Rasmus Kofoed, who rose from second to first place, taking over from another Dane, Noma.
Six Spanish restaurants in all made the top 50 list.
Bittor Arginzoniz 's Asador Etxebarri in Vizcaya was originally one of the favourites, but dropped from third place down to sixth.
Also appearing on the list are Elkano in Guetaria, Guipúzcoa, in position 16 (the same place it occupied last year); Mugaritz in Errenteria, Guipúzcoa, one of the oldest in the ranking, and which went from position 14 to 21; and Quique Dacosta in Dénia, Alicante, in 42nd place.
Not to be left out, Aponiente in the town of El Puerto de Santa María in Cádiz, won the ‘Best Sustainable Restaurant’ in the world award, thanks to its innovative work in the marine environment and the use of unusual resources such as plankton, and the brand new award for best sommelier went to the Spanish Josep Roca, from El Celler de Can Roca in Girona.
