Unemployment in Spain has fallen for its ninth consecutive month, marking last month as the lowest November figure since 2008. The decline has reduced the number of people out of work by 826,102, according to the data released by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy on Thursday December 2.
There are now 3,182,687 people out of a job in Spain, and incredibly, there are now 63,360 fewer people in the unemployment lines than in February 2020, right before the coronavirus pandemic struck.
It is important to note, however, that November’s tally doesn’t include those in receipt of ERTE, who are on suspended contracts or reduced hours, as the system still counts them as technically employed.
Unemployment decreased in all sectors last month, but the most notable changes were seen in the service industry, which employed an additional 48,528 people compared to October, followed by the group without previous employment, which increased by 7,756 people.
Overall, 15 autonomous communities in Spain registered a decrease in unemployment in November, with only the Balearic Islands and Asturias registering an increase. The greatest reductions were noted in the Valencian Community (-30,633), Madrid (-11,477) and Andalucía (-9,162).
Finally, registered unemployment among foreigners fell by 7,610 people (-1.8%) compared to October, which is an impressive 26.5% less than in November 2020.
A further indication that the economy is experiencing an upturn is that fact that a total of 189 million euros was paid out in EETE in October (the latest data available), the lowest figure since the aid system was launched at the height of the pandemic.
