ARCHIVED - Van transporting sailing boats catches fire on the N-332 in Santa Pola
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is believed to have been mechanical
A van transporting several sailing boats to Santa Pola, on the Costa Blanca coast in Alicante province (Baix Vinalopó comarca) caught fire on Thursday whilst travelling along the N-332.
The fire started from beneath the vehicle and no injuries were reported, although the vehicle was totally destroyed. Fortunately the trailer was detatched from the van and although the boats acquired a distinctly oven-roasted odour, were not destroyed in the fire.
The incident took place at around 9 am and within an hour the flames had been extinguished. The source of the fire has not been explained, but the vehicle, which was transporting sailing boats to a competition, is reporting as having suffered from “mechanical issues”.
The van caught fire just metres away from a plot of agricultural farmland and six firefighters from the parque de Elche travelled to the location to deal with the fire, as well as a sergeant and a corporal. A land-based urban pump and a heavy pump were used to extinguish the blaze.
