ARCHIVED - Vandals graffiti Spanish flag over 6,000-year-old rock art
All cave art is protected by the Regional Heritage Law in Spain
Ciudad Real residents were left stunned this week when a giant Spanish flag appeared painted over 6,000-year-old cave drawings on the Peñón del Muerto in Castilla-La Mancha. All rock art of this kind comes under regional jurisdiction and is protected by the local Heritage Law.
Sadly, this is not even the first time that the Peñón del Muerto has been vandalised, nor is it the most destructive or expensive act, according to the mayor of Solana del Pino, Josefa Poyatos. Defacing priceless art work in the area’s main tourist attraction with a picture of a Spanish flag is, she said, “profoundly unpatriotic”.
Technical personnel have already been dispatched to the cave to assess the damage prior to repairs.
The graffiti appeared last week and has covered three anthropomorphic paintings originating from the Neolithic era, between six thousand and seven thousand years ago. The flag is clearly visible from the road and the experts believe it was a well organised and executed act of vandalism, since the culprits would have had to bring ladders with them.
As a result of the latest defilement, the Anasma association, which works to spread the tourist, cultural and artistic values and attractions of this mountain region, is now planning to stop revealing the location of newly discovered rock art in an attempt to preserve them.
