VIDEO: Massive hammerhead shark filmed in the Canary Islands
Dozens of sharks have been spotted off the coast of Spain already this summer
Several species of shark call the warm waters off coastal Spain their home, so sightings are common enough, especially during the summer months. However, most sightings are fairly unremarkable and certainly not as iconic as the hammerhead, which was filmed lurking in shallow waters of Santa Catalina dock in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria over the weekend.
Dozens of people flocked to the shore to catch a glimpse of this distinctive shark, named for the unusual shape of its head.

According to the local Port authorities, the hammerhead shark is typically found in warm and temperate waters and its presence is an indicator of the rich marine biodiversity that characterises the Archipelago. While sightings in port areas like Santa Catalina are rare, they are not unheard of, and the Canary Islands provide an ideal habitat for various shark species.
This week's sighting follows another exciting encounter in June, when a shark approximately three metres long was seen near the coast of Telde, Gran Canaria. That incident led to a temporary beach closure at Melenara and Salinetas as a precaution, with local authorities activating a prevention protocol that included the use of drones and jet skis to monitor the situation.
While the presence of sharks in coastal waters may spark concern, local authorities emphasise that these animals do not usually pose a significant danger if appropriate precautions are taken. The hammerhead shark, in particular, is considered harmless to humans, and most species have very few recorded attacks.
