ARCHIVED - Vodafone to connect Canary Islands with Europe via submarine cable
Vodafone Spain plans to extend the 2Africa submarine cable system to facilitate the "best connectivity" to the Canary Islands.
Around €10 million is being invested in infrastructure that will connect the Canary Islands and the Iberian Peninsula with a new extension of the 2Africa submarine cable.
It follows an agreement between Vodafone and Cabildo de Tenerife through the public company Canalink which will provide the necessary capacity for decades to come for voice and data traffic.
The deal also allows both parties to commercialise the provision of services to the public or private sector in order to make the investment profitable as they will each have a 50 per cent share in the Canary Islands' section of the state-of-the-art underwater system, which will be built by Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN).
The 2Africa consortium is an association of major African and global carriers that provides Internet access and capacity across the Middle East and Africa.
This in turn supports the growth of 4G, 5G and fixed broadband access for hundreds of millions of people.
